Creative Ways to Develop Digital Literacy and Language Skills by Connecting Reading and Writing

Roleplay, Emoting, and Fanfiction for Storytelling   The world has changed because of COVID and one of the most important changes is that more educators and students have started exploring different digital tools that allow them to keep on learning. One way to do this is to use immersive worlds, people can use avatars to socially interact in immersive settings for fun, work, or learning. Traditionally most people have used them to play games. Roleplaying in Avilion. Molero (2020) One of the most popular digital and creative linguistic practices in Virtual worlds like  Second Life  (Links to an external site.)  or  OpenSim  (Links to an external site.)  is Roleplaying. More than a game roleplaying is an excellent opportunity for students and educators to meet other people, belong to a community, learn about different cultures, and develop their digital literacy and English language skills. Immersive Storytelling: from Virtual Worlds to Virtual Reality at UniVirtual Experience

Transmedia Storytelling was part of the UniVirtual Experience. A panel hosted by Amany Alkhayat and supported by  Heike Philp, Dr. Doris Molero, and Helena Galani had the opportunity to present to an audience in AltSpaceVR. Immersive Storytelling: from Virtual Worlds to Virtual Reality According to research, Virtual Reality is informed by the use of virtual worlds for education. We present the main challenges addressed and the outcomes produced during a five weeks workshop earlier this year with 8 moderators and 110 participant English teachers, an EVO session organized by TESOL International. The workshop "Immersive Storytelling In Virtual Worlds" focused on the skills, methods, and techniques required for promoting the use of VWs for Transmedia Storytelling in the new classroom and it touched upon the use, methods, and techniques of VR in storytelling . AltspaceVR is a platform that today the platform is considered a place for live virtual events. In addition to a wide va

Best of EVO 2021 - Immersive Storytelling in Virtual Worlds

Image
Storytelling is a wonderful means of getting our students excited. Recreating such a story in a virtual world would provide a great setting for roleplay and fanfiction. Yet, how difficult is it to recreate scenes of Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter, or King Arthur and his Round Table in OpenSim? What about character creation? Changing avatar outfits, clothes and accessories? When creating the scene, what building skills are required, and when it comes to storytelling, what skills are required to come up with a captivating story? These main three challenges will be addressed in this EVO session and we hope to recreate a story in OpenSim. Importing 3D objects and create Mesh objects in OpenSim

Image
We can use 3D models created with external modeling programs such as Blender, 3D Studio Max, Maya, or Wings 3D. You’ll export these in   Collada digital asset exchange format   so that you’ll then be able to import them as meshes into OpenSim.  First, let’s find out what Collada is. Collada (short for  COLLAborative Design Activity ) defines an open standard digital asset XML database schema for interactive 3D applications enabling the exchange of digital assets between applications without loss of information. Or, to put it more simply, Collada provides an application-independent schema for representing 3D objects. This means that you can create a model in, say, Blender, export it to Collada (as a .dae file, i.e. ‘Digital Asset Exchange’ format), and import it into, for example, OpenSim.
