TESOL International Association's Computer-Assisted Language Learning Section (CALL-IS) invited ELT educators around the world to participate in the free, open TESOL Electronic Village (EV) during the convention (March 23-25, 2022). This year's EV was a completely virtual ed-tech learning space for TESOL professionals.
Participants visited the virtual EV to discover new e-tools and instructional activities, learn with CALL experts and colleagues around the world. They could share their tech-supported teaching experiences ... and more!
EV sessions were both synchronous (live) and asynchronous (on demand) to accommodate global schedules. CALL-IS also created self-directed, hands-on EV learning opportunities that enabled participants to "tinker" with a selection of free tech tools and reflect on how they might use them in class or for professional development.
These are some of the presentations:
Immersive Building in Virtual Worlds and Virtual Reality
Participants learned to build a home, create and add 3D objects and customize avatars in Second Life, OpenSim, Minecraft, VRChat, AltspaceVR.
This session invited interested teachers to join in playing Minecraft. Through meaningful play, They learned all they could about playing Minecraft alone and together. They learned and understood through play how Minecraft can be used effectively in language learning.
We can use 3D models created with external modeling programs such as Blender, 3D Studio Max, Maya, or Wings 3D. You’ll export these in Collada digital asset exchange format so that you’ll then be able to import them as meshes into OpenSim. First, let’s find out what Collada is. Collada (short for COLLAborative Design Activity ) defines an open standard digital asset XML database schema for interactive 3D applications enabling the exchange of digital assets between applications without loss of information. Or, to put it more simply, Collada provides an application-independent schema for representing 3D objects. This means that you can create a model in, say, Blender, export it to Collada (as a .dae file, i.e. ‘Digital Asset Exchange’ format), and import it into, for example, OpenSim. Light bulbs and puzzle pieces symbolize ideas and language learning." Storytelling for Language Learning: How Writing Plots Enhances Language Acquisition Language learning is a multifaceted endeavor that extends beyond memorizing vocabulary and mastering grammar rules. It involves engaging with the language in ways that mirror its use in real life—dynamic, expressive, and context-rich. One highly effective method to achieve this is through storytellin...
